SEO Stands for Search Engine Optimization.
What it means simply is when people offer to improve your websites SEO, they mean they will try and improve your Page number & position on the left hands side off a search engine for a Specific keyword/phrase. Ideally you want to be near the top of the first page for the most relevant keywords/phrases that will help get you more customers to the site and then for them to ring up or buy something from your website.
10 SEO Tips
- Research your competitors, see how they layout there site copy and what is on their site, if there near the top, they must be doing something Right!
- When writing copy for your website, try and think of phrases/words that you would type into search engines. i.e. “Ladies red shoes size 5” to find yourself.
- Don’t just think of the easy keywords/phrases such as “Red shoes” when you are doing your research as they will be harder to get on the first few pages of a search engine, That doesn’t mean don’t include them, as it will help with your site.
- When doing your keyword/phases research, there is a great easy to use tool called Google adwords that gives you an estimation on how hard the competition is for a particular word or phrases it also tell you approximately how many “searches” are being view in an average 12 month period for each keyword/phrase.
- Click on https://adwords.google.com/o/Targeting/Explorer?__u=1000000000&__c=1000000000&ideaRequestType=KEYWORD_IDEAS#search.none
- Then simply enter the words/phrases you wish to test, then enter the security words it displays above the search box if you don’t have a Google account and aren’t signed in, and then finally click the “Search” button.
- Google will then give you information on your results and also give you potential suggestions for keywords/phrases if it has any.
- When looking at your results you need to look at the “Local Monthly Searches” column if you are targeting nationally and not internationally. The number tells you how many approximate searches have been made over a 12 month period.
- The other thing you need to look at is the competition bar, the less filled in green it is, the less competition there is for the keywords/phrases.
- So your Ideal search phrases will be multiple phases with a low-medium competition with a high-ish (1000’s) search volume.
- Where possible, try and put your product/service that you wish to show up in the search engines into your heading on the page, i.e. if you sell Red Shoes your title could be “Our Red Shoes are great value at £4.99!”
- Update your website regularly with relevant information about your product/services or about events you’re attending etc.
- Where possible mention those keywords/phrases around three times no more than 6 on a single page otherwise if you put it too many times, the search engines might think you are trying to trick them by putting your page full of keywords.
- Where possible, highlight the keywords/ phrases in bold text or in sub headings, this helps the search engines figure what are keywords or not if it is done more than once on a page.
- When you add a picture to your website, Rename the file of your picture to what it is, i.e. don’t upload a picture of tree with the filename DC1232.jpg, rename it to “Big-oak-tree.jpg” this will help with your overall SEO and help show up potentially in image libraries such as Google Image search.
- Finally when writing copy for your site, always make it readable by humans, no point making it SEO friendly and not human friendly!
